Treatment of chronic back pain by means of injection is not a new phenomenon in medical science. In fact, the use of injections for the treatment of chronic back pain can be traced back to the beginning of  20th century. It was around the mid-1950s, that the first injections were invented for the treatment of lower back pain sciatica. These injections were epidural and were exclusively used for the treatment of lower back pain. They were a major success in alleviating the pain associated with lumbar disc herniation.

Generally speaking a chronic epidural back pain injection is used in the treatment of pain in the lower part of the spine and the region in and around the groin and the legs. The injection is primarily used to provide relief and can take anything from a week to a year to cure the patient completely. It is exclusively used to rehabilitate patients suffering from chronic pain. Hence, it is prescribed along with the normal  side rehabilitation procedures such as physical exercises and other allopathic medications. The injections have been found to have a success rate of 50% success rate in patients suffering from the pain.

Any chronic pain can be associated with inflammation and swelling of certain parts of the body . This is referred to as lumbar disc herniation in spinal pain. Steroids are found to be effective in such case as it delivers the medicine directly to the region of inflammation
The epidural space comprises of a region between a membrane known as the dura matter and the outer wall comprising of vertebral matter. This region is filled with numerous blood vessels and fats and it is this region where the steroid is injected into. The area is just analogous to the dural sac. The epidural injection comprises of a flushing out substance which flushes out toxins from the region. These substances could be something like the general saline or lidocaine and the injection may also be helpful in  flushing or cleaning out proteins that are highly inflammatory in nature.

Middle Upper Back Pain

Middle, upper back pain occurs in the cervical spine, the upper portion of the spine. It consists of the upper part of the spinal column, a portion susceptible to dangerous injuries. Cervical spine is made up of seven vertebrae working as a bridge between the head, thorax and the trunk. The bones in this part are smaller than the other bones of the spine. This makes it possible for you to move your head freely.

Muscle tissues and ligaments make it possible for cervical spine to move. Muscles help in the movement of spine where as ligaments give stability to the bones and a broader range of movement. Some sort of trauma has been found to be the main reason in most of the cases of pain in the cervical spine. This trauma may come as a result of terrible accident or a huge force compressing the cervical spine.

There are other conditions too that can affect the upper portion of the spine. Rheumatoid arthritis is one such condition. Moreover stenosis, spondylosis or cervical disc ruptures may also give pain and discomfort to the movement of cervical spine. Discs found between vertebrae are made of cartilage. Arthritis, on the other hand leads to degeneration of the discs. This results in severe middle upper back pain. To have a fluid movement, the cervical vertebrae should be in a healthy state.
Pain in this area may develop suddenly or over time. But it needs immediate treatment otherwise condition may take turn for the worse. Some medication like Ibuprofen and Tylenol can give some relief. But, they are not without side effects. They could result in gastrointestinal bleeding and other risks. Moreover, ice packs and heating pads are also good treatment methods. Rest is always a good method to avoid pain.

Muscle relaxants as a treatment relax your muscles and reduce muscle spasm. But it should be used only after taking advice from a doctor. Physical therapy, chiropractor treatment and steroids are some other very useful treatments for cervical spine ache. Surgery is always the last option.

Neck Shoulder and Upper Back Pain

Neck, shoulder and upper back are the areas where there is a complex network of nerves, ligaments, arteries, and veins. They are quite sensitive and prone to sudden bouts of sudden pain. Regarding the causes of neck shoulder and upper back pain, there are innumerable reasons for them. Pain that is felt between the lumbar spine and the lowermost portion of the neck is called upper back pain. It is also sometimes termed as thoracic pain or middle back pain. The area referred to here is very strong in the sense that it supports the whole weight of the upper body and also provides a cavity for heart and lungs.

Causes of upper back pain are confusing but among them, the foremost causes are myofascial pain or muscular irritation and joint dysfunctions. If the bones of a particular region are not strong, the pain can attack you. It is very important to realize the cause of your pain, if you want to recover completely from it.

Prevention against injury is the most important method to try and avoid this pain. The pain in this area can be avoided through regular exercise and doing some light weight training. Try and avoid any activity that causes repetitive stress on the upper back. Always try to get a good posture while sleeping and sitting. For the treatment of neck and shoulder, there are commonly-available anti-inflammatory and analgesics. In cases of extreme pain, a corticosteroid injection can be quite helpful. While for the severe cases surgery is required.
