Eliminate Back Pain Mother Nature’s Way?

It seems no matter where I go grandmas and grandpas chasing after those little ones are looking for ways to eliminate back pain, Mother Nature’s way. Pushing those swings, rocking the teeter-totter and climbing the ladder to the slide work muscles we have not used for decades.
Sometimes though the pain we suffer does not result from simply playing with the grandkids. There are many reasons our back may hurt and the pangs of pain radiate down our legs. Listed below are some of the more common culprits that plague my family. Maybe you can relate with one or more, too.
Eliminate Back Pain From:
Herniated disc – herniated disk refers to a problem with one of the cushions (disks) between the individual bones (vertebrae) that line up to make your spine.
A spinal disk is a little like a jelly donut, with a softer center encased within a tougher exterior. Sometimes called a slipped disk or a ruptured disk, a herniated disk occurs when some of the softer “jelly” pushes out through a crack in the tougher exterior.
A herniated disk can irritate nearby nerves and result in excruciating pain, numbness or weakness in an arm or leg. On the other hand, many people experience no symptoms from a herniated disk. Most people who have a herniated disk do not need surgery to correct the problem.
Deteriorated disc – Degenerative disc disease is a spinal condition caused by the breakdown of your intervertebral discs. As you age, your spine begins to show signs of wear and tear as your discs dry out and shrink. These age-related changes can lead to arthritis, disc herniation, or spinal stenosis, which can put pressure on your spinal cord and nerves and may cause back pain.
Strain – Muscle strains and lumbar sprains are the most common causes of low back pain. A low back muscle strain occurs when the muscle fibers are abnormally stretched or torn. A lumbar sprain occurs when the ligaments, the tough bands of tissue that hold bones together, are torn from their attachments. Differentiating a strain from a sprain can be difficult, as both injuries will show similar symptoms. In general, it does not matter what you call the problem because the treatment and prognosis for both back strains and sprains is the same. When the lumbar spine is strained or sprained, inflammation of the soft-tissues will result. This inflammation causes pain and can cause muscle spasm. People are often surprised at how painful and debilitating a lumbar strain or sprain can be–these are not small injuries.
Sciatica – Sciatica refers to pain, weakness, numbness, or tingling in the leg. It is caused by injury to or pressure on the sciatic nerve. Sciatica is a symptom of another medical problem, not a medical condition on its own. Sciatica occurs when there is pressure or damage to the sciatic nerve. This nerve starts in the lower spine and runs down the back of each leg. This nerve controls the muscles of the back of the knee and lower leg and provides sensation to the back of the thigh, part of the lower leg, and the sole of the foot.
Spinal Stenosis – Spinal stenosis is narrowing of the spinal column that causes pressure on the spinal cord, or narrowing of the openings (called neural foramina) where spinal nerves leave the spinal column. Spinal stenosis usually occurs as a person ages and the disks become drier and start to bulge. At the same time, the bones and ligaments of the spine thicken or grow larger due to arthritis or long-term swelling (inflammation).
Osteoarthritis – Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common joint disorder, which is due to aging and wear and tear on a joint. Osteoarthritis is a normal result of aging. It is also caused by ‘wear and tear’ on a joint.
Cartilage is the firm, rubbery tissue that cushions your bones at the joints, and allows bones to glide over one another.
If the cartilage breaks down and wears away, the bones rub together. This causes pain, swelling, and stiffness.
Bony spurs or extra bone may form around the joint. The ligaments and muscles around the joint become weaker and stiffer. Bony spurs or extra bone may form around the joint. The ligaments and muscles Pain and stiffness in the joints are the most common symptoms. When you put weight or pressure on the joint, the pain is often worse especially after exercise.
During the day, the pain may get worse when you are active and feel better when you are resting. After a while, the pain may be present when you are resting. It may even wake you up at night.
Now that we know some of the physical things that can cause us pain let us look at what they all have in common, the root of the cause of pain, inflammation.
Inflammation is the body’s attempt at self-protection; the aim being to remove harmful stimuli, including damaged cells, irritants, or pathogens – and begin the healing process.
When something harmful or irritating affects a part of our body, there is a biological response to try to remove it, the signs and symptoms of inflammation, specifically acute inflammation, show that the body is trying to heal itself. Inflammation does not mean infection, even when an infection causes inflammation. A bacterium, virus or fungus causes infection, while inflammation is the body’s response to it.
There are two types of inflammation, acute and chronic. Acute inflammation starts quickly and become severe. This type of inflammation usually is present for a few days or weeks. One example of acute inflammation would be an ingrown toenail. When we remove the irritant, (toenail) the body heals itself and the inflammation ceases.
Chronic inflammation is long-term and can last sometimes for years. This is an autoimmune response from our own body. For example, our body attacks our healthy tissue thinking it is harmful pathogens.
So how can we eliminate the inflammation that could be good yet might be bad for us? When we understand that the body is capable of knowing the difference and we eliminate the underlying cause of the inflammation “oxidative stress” then our bodies will use the inflammation as its tool for healing or it will eliminate it as its unwanted guest. Isn’t it wonderful to know that without drugs we can eliminate back pain Mother Nature’s way?
If you know someone, whom could benefit from this information please pass it along. Knowledge is power, we all need all the help we can get to eliminate inflammation, and in the process, our body will stop the pain.
