Neck And Upper Back Pain From Lifting

The upper portion of spinal chord is a combination of seven small bones called vertebrae. These are the bones which support the shoulder, arms, neck and head. The entire skeletal structure is held in its place by a system of muscles and nerves. The muscles extend into the shoulders and arms as well. Sitting or standing in an incorrect posture for a long time can lead to muscle strain. Muscle strain can also be caused by excessive exercising. Because the muscles and nerves extend into arms and hands, any pain felt in neck or upper back can be also felt in the shoulders and arms.

Neck and upper back pain is very common among those people who lift heavy weights. Excessive workout through heavy weight-lifting can causes the muscles to get fatigued. Lifting also results in a severe pain in their upper back, neck and arms.

If you lift some heavy object the muscles and nerves of your hands, arms and neck are over stretched. Poor lifting methods could lead to some serious problems like wear and tear or injury to muscles and ligaments, injury to spinal chord or damage to vertebrae

Neck And Upper Back Pain And Spasms

The head is joined to the rest of the body through the spine. The upper portion of the spine comprises of seven vertebrae. These bones attach the ribcage, the shoulder bones and arms to the torso. The structure is held in place by muscles and ligaments. Some muscles are also attached to the base of your neck and the arms to the spinal chord. Lack of activities like standing or sitting in the same posture for a very long time can lead to fatigue in these muscles. This results in occurrence of a strong sensation of pain. This pain can be also felt in your arms and hands because of the extension of these muscles into them.

Upper back pain and/or spasms is very common in athletes. It is because they are constantly exposed to excessive exercise and overuse of muscles. Upper back pain and spasms in them should be treated properly otherwise it may lead to serious problems.

Most of the time the upper back and neck pain result from lack of activities, poor posture or too much exercise. Sitting in the wrong posture for a very long time may put excessive stress on your muscles and may result in severe neck and back pain.

Spasm
Muscle spasms normally occur when the muscles are over worked or are injured. Over work or injury leads to involuntary contraction of muscles. Sometimes dehydration may also leads to spasms. Some spasms occur when the nerves connected to the muscles are disturbed. The person suffering from spasm feels a stiffness and tightening of muscles that results in severe pain.

When the neck muscles constantly repeat the same activity or witness no activity at all, a muscle spasm may occur. Activities like cycling may also lead to upper back pain and spasms. Some trigger points are formed in the muscles that send pain signals to the brain, leading to a feeling of strong pain.

Some activities that lead to upper back pain and spasms are:

* An incorrectly placed monitor can lead to upper back pain and spasms because your head and neck are consistently locked in a position. Monitor screen should be at eye level.
* Sitting in a position with your back and head bent forward may lead to severe neck and back pain or spasms.
* Wrongly placed keyboard and mouse, and excessive use of neck and shoulder muscles may result in stiffness of muscles or headache.
* Poor lighting and small font size can also multiply the problem. You would not be able to view the monitor properly due to it. This may lead to poor neck and head position while focusing on the screen.
* Holding the phone with the support of your neck.

Neck And Mid Back Pain

If you feel both neck and mid back pain together, don't take it for granted that the muscles of your back have spasms or strains. It can be more than that. The responsible factor for this neck and mid back pain may not be your back, your neck vertebrae too may be responsible.

If you have any such experience, its better to visit a doctor to confirm the cause. The physiotherapist will take some x-rays of your back, neck and the whole of the spinal cord. X-rays detect any kind of strain or slip discs. The neck disorder of vertebrae is called cervical spondylitis or spondylosis.

The cervical spondylosis is the result of de-generative change of the inter vertebral discs and the bones of your neck. The very common name of this condition is 'neck osteoarthritis'. Even some people simply calls de-generative disc disease of neck.

The most common cause of cervical spondylosis is aging. According to medical studies the condition starts infesting after a persons attains a age of 40 and progresses to a very bad state slowly. Its even seen that men are more prone to this ailment. The condition if left unattended often rolls over to a condition called myelopathy. This cervical spondylosis has been rated as the most common cause of neck pain and that subsequently affects your spinal cord and the pain reaches your mid back.

Though its called a aged problem yet, the condition may occur due to bad life style. The neck may victim of certain bad posture of sitting. Some kind of shock may also be responsible for the degeneration of your neck.

Most of the treatments aim at reducing the neck and back pain, the spine irritation, the nerve pain and to improve the condition of  cervical spondylosis. The treatment modules followed for the disordered neck are as follows: Medications of certain medicines to reduce the pain. Then use of neck braces for keeping the neck in immobilize position. Some physiotherapy sessions are also applicable. At extreme conditions surgery is recommended.

Herniated Cervical Disc
The whole of the spine is at the risk of herniation or rapture. But the most prone areas are the lumbar region, and the cervical region. When a bulging disk occurs in the area of neck, it is called herniated cervical disk.

What are the causes of herniated cervical disk?
There are three most common possible ways by which cervical disk gets raptured. They are aging, stress of longer periods and the last one is a sudden injury. In aging, the disks slowly lose the elasticity, and the gelatinous material inside the joints get shrunk. This results in the disk to rapture. The rapture disk than comes out and causes the herniation.

In longer stress like bad posture of sitting, sleeping, the joints get stressed and the result is a bulge of the disk. In case of injury the cartilaginous cushions get much tensed and one or two of them come out. The injury can be caused by a sudden jerk or some strong movement of the neck in wrong position.

Symptoms of Herniation in the neck:
Well the first symptom is pain and difficulty in moving the neck. Then swelling may arise and the area may be heated up. In some cases the pain travels towards the shoulders and down to the warms and hands. If it persist without treatment then it will cause your finger to numbness.

What are the treatments of this bulging disk?
There are wide range of treatments for this condition. One can go for regular treatments or can go for alternative treatments. Exercise is the common advisable prescription for both the kinds of treatments. But in alternative treatment there is no mention of medicines or surgery. In regular practice a doctor can advice medicines and in severe cases surgery is recommended. Whatever treatment you choose its up to you, but don't delay if you are suffering from any such problems.
