Upper back pain is less common than lower back pain, but still it is present in a great amount of people also affecting their lives. The common cause of upper back pain is a myofascial pain or joint dysfunction. However it can also be an indicator of a problem in the disc in the upper back.

The upper back is also called the thoracic spine, and unlike the neck and the lower back it doesn't have much mobility. Its main function is of support: to help us stand straight and protect the organs. That is also the reason why this type of back pain is not so common.

Upper Back Pain Treatment

The upper back pain can be treated by following some of these options:

Massage therapy
Acupuncture
Chiropractic manipulation
Passive physical therapy/ exercise

An upper back pain rehab program will put great emphasis on stretching and back muscle strengthening.

Other methods will focus on what are called the “trigger points”, these are the points that start the back pain. Treatments like massaging and acupuncture use this principle.

If you think this is a common upper back pain you can use some advice to expect some improvement. If no improvement is shown, you should go see a doctor.

Use an over-the-counter medication for back pain. Remember to read the instructions, specially if you are pregnant or lactating.

Use sports bra. These bras provide better support. If you are a big woman, research on available “more supportive) bras.

Work on your posture. Bad posture is a big factor that influences back pain. Correct it and see improvements.
